The wrong question
The wrong question is “which mower has the most AI?” The buying question is whether the new navigation stack removes enough boundary installation, stuck events and manual edge work to justify a four-figure upgrade.
What changed in 2026
Wire-free mowing has moved quickly. LiDAR, RTK/NRTK, vision and AWD are now competing to make installation easier and navigation more robust. A recent multi-mower field test found major progress, while still calling out edge trimming, obstacle detection, gates, cloud dependence and price as unresolved burdens.
Three practical buyer profiles
- Flat, simple lawn: do not overpay for off-road capability you will never use.
- Trees / weak satellite view: LiDAR or multi-sensor fallback can matter more than headline slope numbers.
- Steep / rough lawn: AWD and turning behavior can be worth the premium if they reduce rescues and turf damage.
What Useworthy still wants to know
Across almost every premium mower, the missing metric is the same: human interventions per 100 mowing hours over a full season, with firmware version and garden context. Until that exists, “set-and-forget” remains partly a claim.
